John E. Collins

Biography

John E. Collins, also knowns as John “Jammin” Collins, is a radio moderator, DJ, producer, promoter–and since the beginning has been an important figure in the Detroit house and techno scene. In the 1980s he was resident DJ at the legendary Detroit club Cheeks along with Jeff Mills. In the early 1990s he began to do his own radio programmes on local stations such as WJLB FM 98 and WDRQ 93.1. For WJLB FM 98, for instance, he broadcast live from the Warehouse Club, thereby supporting music by artists from Detroit. Today he not only works as a booking agent and manager, but also as producer and DJ for Underground Resistance, with which he tours through Detroit and the whole world. In addition Collins is the director of Submerge, the operations arm of the group, leading tours through their techno museum Exhibit 3000. Currently he is broadcasting the radio show “The Soul of Detroit” twice a week, initiated by Detroit’s Red Bull Studios, in which he presents vinyl records from the areas of house, techno, R&B, disco and other genres. Collins is a member of the Detroit Entertainment Commission and a member of the board of the Detroit Berlin Connection.
