Luk Perceval

Biography

Luk Perceval began working in the theatre in 1979 as an actor at the National Theatre in Antwerp, which he left five years later to found the group Blauwe Maandag Compagnie. Here he began directing, taking over the artistic direction of the group from 1991 to 2005. His staging of Shakespeare “Schlachten!” was premiered in 1999 at the Salzburg Festspiele and was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen the following year. In 1998 Perceval was director of the National Theatre in Antwerp, which he restructured into Het Toneelhuis. From 2005 to 2008 Luk Perceval was resident director at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, and since the 2009/2010 season he has been the main director at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. His numerous stagings of opera and theatre have been shown at international festivals and have won many awards. His staging of “Jeder stirbt für sich allein”, after the novel by Hans Fallada, was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2013 and was named Staging of the Year in the critics survey at the trade magazine Theater Heute. In the same year Perceval was awarded the German Theatre Prize Der Faust in the category of directing. 2013 also saw the creation of the production “Platonow” at NTGent, which he now brings to HAU Hebbel am Ufer.
