Tianzhuo Chen

Biography

Tianzhuo Chen has established a distinct voice in contemporary art through an eclectic and multidisciplinary practice that encompasses performance, installation, video, photography, and works on paper. Often, these elements converge seamlessly in his complex, hypnotic performances, which blur the boundaries between exhibition and theater.

Within his work, fragmented pieces of information and symbols emerge, drawn from diverse sources such as subcultures, club culture, religious rituals, and ecological debates to explore the diverse definitions of existence, the forms of spirits, (non-)material forces, and the complexity of our current post-human reality.

While Chen’s work can initially appear puzzling in its novelty and absurdity, his intention is not to confuse or demand that viewers decode every symbol or detail. Instead, he seeks to construct an alternative world—one that exists ambiguously between everyday reality and illusion. This world invites visitors to engage not just visually, but aurally and physically. Across his diverse and multidisciplinary practice, a constant emerges: the intensity of his visual imagery, which often overwhelms in its richness and depth. Through this, Chen persistently reflects on the absurdity of life and death.
