The degree to which cultural attributions are marked by clichés becomes clear in the example of Pakistan. As a rule the country is represented as a refuge for terror, religious fanaticism, corruption, and chaos, which would have very little in common with rational western culture. The weekend festival “From Inside to Way Out” confronts these common distortions with representations of the hybrid transculturality of contemporary Pakistan, the existence of which is made possible in the first place by the cultural as well as physical interspaces that avoid these common ascriptions. The three-day programme presents artists, musicians and filmmakers who work in Karachi and Berlin. Their works deconstruct seemingly unified cultural identities on both sides, uncovering surprising commonalities. A programme by HAU Hebbel am Ufer in collaboration with Andi and Hannes Teichmann.
