Between Identities

Part of "From Inside to Way Out"

Dokumentary films: Till Passow “Mast Qalandar – Der Ekstatische” (D 2005, 30min) / Saadat Munir “Chuppan Chappai / Hide & Seek” (PAK/DK 2013, 57min)

Two films thematize contemporary forms of transgressing common identities, which at the same time stand in ancient traditions. In "Mast Qualandar" Till Passow follows the devotees of the Sufi Mast Qalandar in their search for religious ecstasy. “Hide & Seek” by Saadat Munir portrays the ordinary lives of hijras, traditionally assigned the so-called ‘third sex.’ The following discussion looks into both the fatal aggression and the subversive power that hybrid identities can spark.
