"The Aesthetics of Resistance"

  • Dialogue
English /

It seems Europe is at crossroads again: on the one hand we witness a progressively rising right wing populism, on the other hand we have new left movements and radical left political parties. Using Peter Weiss’ historical novel about the anti-fascist resistance "The Aesthetics of Resistance" as a starting point, the main target of our debate will be an investigation into the complex relationship between Resistance and Aesthetics. If every theatre, as the French philosopher Alain Badiou claims, is positioned between love and politics, then our task today is precisely to think these three constituent parts of this dialectical relationship: theatre, love and politics.

Oliver Frljić is one of the most acclaimed theatre-directors from Croatia and the current director of the National Theatre in Rijeka, Borka Pavićević is a legendary figure of the Serbian Left and the director of Centre for Cultural Decontamination in Belgrade, and Srećko Horvat is one of the leading young philosophers from the Balkans and director of the “Philosophical Theatre” at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The moderator of debate is Boris Buden, a Berlin-based philosopher and cultural critic.

In collaboration with Centre for Cultural Decontamination (Belgrade). The project “The Aesthetics of Resistance“ is supported by Change of Scene, a program of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute.
