“We need to learn to think of the anomalous, the monstrously different not as a sign of pejoration but as the unfolding of virtual possibilities that point to positive alternatives for us all… the human is now displaced in the direction of a glittering range of post-human variables.” – Rosi Braidotti

“Virtual Wombs” brings virtual reality into the theatre space and deals with mutation and transformation and with the potentials of worldbuilding, the creation of digital, reality-expanding worlds. The performers, both physical and virtual, take the audience on a tender journey into the womb of the pregnant post-human.

In this piece, Anan Fries and Malu Peeters build on years of collaboration, previously in the context of the performance collective Henrike Iglesias and the game theatre collective machina eX. Here, they explore their shared passion for virtual possibilities and immersive experiments, introducing the audience to unfamiliar places while creating safe and sensitive spaces.

The HAU co-production uses VR glasses and is thus a hybrid of a spatial sound environment, a light installation, and a virtual reality trip which visitors are invited to join in small groups.
