A robot-assisted recital: in a circle of 64 computer-controlled machines that drum complex rhythms onto the floor, Antony Hamilton and his colleague Alisdair Macindoe carry out synchronous, symmetrical, coordinated minimal movements. Influenced by urban popping and locking, the duet merges the organic with the mechanical. Hamilton and Macindoe come across like acrobats in a circus ring, then like robots performing monotonous tasks on an assembly line. Finally they rearrange themselves and the ‘drum tappers’, and the choreography becomes a mechanically animated sound installation: after the initially meditative tapping comes an increasingly polyphonous buzzing, ringing and drumming, as in a toyshop or a clockmaker’s. A magical mechanical-human dialogue, with which the Australian choreographer and the dancer and instrument-maker Alisdair Macindoe are appearing in Berlin for the first time.
