The Last King of Kakfontein

60 min

A decrepit and absent-minded king wearing a shower head for a crown has thrown a party in his palace. The high point of the party has long since passed, the guests know that, but the King seems to ignore it. In his performances, the choreographer and performer Boyzie Cekwana repeatedly finds unexpected and provocative images in order to pick up on political topics. In “The Last King of Kakfontein“ he carries off the audience in a fictional kingdom of the ultimate evil. Many of the actual presidents are blueprints and protagonists of a metaphorical processing of the demise of democratic aspirations. Shadows of paper monsters, vocal incantations of obsolete Mbaqanga songs, stolen poems of Mqhayi and dancing bodies on rubber tyres leave traces on grey walls. Welcome to Kakfontein.
