"Can theatre be a place from which citizens inject political, aesthetic and social ideas into their city? Can theatre be living space, parliament and academy?" Following Brecht, this is the question asked by deufert&plischke in their project "24h DURCHEINANDER". For a full 24 hours they transform HAU1 into a new epic theatre. Since 2001 they have been merging Brecht’s epic theatre with the critical self-reflection of post-dramatic theatre after Hans-Thies Lehmann and the sensual experience of contemporary dance and participative practices. What can visitors expect? An introductory greeting and a shared evening meal are followed by workshops, night-time parliamentary sessions and tableaux vivants, sleep-in, discussions and performative on-site exploration. Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke, who as an ‘artistwin’ are privately and professionally a couple, have invited artists and theorists such as Thorsten Eibeler, Alain Franco, Roni Katz, Sandra Noeth, Kareth Schaffer, Cecilie Ullerup Schmidt, Marcus Steinweg, Yair Vardi, Stefanie Wenner and Arkadi Zaides to take part. At the end of the event the theatre scholars Hans-Thies Lehmann and Helene Varopoulos will read their specially written ‘Brecht letter’ on new epic theatre. And the audience can also play an active role in creating the shared space and time. Here’s to epic experience, engagement and experiment!
