The Korean choreographer, dancer and performer Geumhyung Jeong brings seven quirky duets to Berlin: interactions with everyday items like a vacuum cleaner or a trolley bag, but also window dummies or masks. Exposed in a cold white light, the objects become partners in an eerie game of mutual manipulation. They take on a bizarre, unsettling life of their own, frighteningly on the boundary between animate and inanimate, human and non-human, hallucination and reality. The show’s deliberate simplicity, its literal character and mechanical accuracy brutally reveal the emptiness and isolation within people, according to Geumhyung Jeong. But poetry and humour also occur, while 7ways revolves around the question of where the boundary between body and machine lies. Geumhyung Jeong, studied acting at Hoseo University in Cheonan, performance at the Korean National University of Arts in Seoul and animated film at the Korean Academy of Film Arts, also in Seoul. In 2011 she appeared in the performing arts festival In Transit at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. In 2013 she was awarded a scholarship to the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, and in 2014 had a residency at PACT Zollverein in Essen. In works that frequently interact with objects, Geumhyung Jeong explores the potentials of the body – its sensuality, its ability to alter its surroundings and to transform itself through the power of desire.
