Part of “Spirits, Jinns & Avatars”
Afterwards available at the HAUthek until 12.3.
Lu Yang’s video work offers a sort of a multi-sensory intoxication. In “DOKU the self” Lu Yang creates a non-binary avatar as a clone of himself, continuing his preoccupation with the digitalization of the human body and new subjectivities. In his video, the artist raises fundamental issues about the relationships between the body and consciousness, spirituality and technology, and the limits of being human. The avatar bears the artist’s facial features and lives in a world strongly influenced by Buddhist ideas and symbols. The viewers accompany Lu Yang's alter ego on a journey through six spiritual reincarnations.
With “DOKU the self” Lu Yang created his first narrative film for the 59th Venice Biennale. His unique works have received numerous awards, including the BMW Art Journey Prize in 2019 and the Deutsche Bank Prize last year.
