Doors 18:30 / Start 19:30
Two concerts in one evening: The three musicians Matana Roberts (alto saxophone, clarinet, vocals), Audrey Chen (vocals, electronics) and Axel Dörner (piano, trumpet) improvise together on the stage of HAU1. Bex Burch (xylophone, percussion, electronics) will open the evening with a solo concert.
The composer, percussionist and instrument maker Bex Burch describes her organic sound textures as “messy minimalism”. These vary between meditative spirituality, improvisation and playful, energetic rhythms.

Originally based in Chicago's jazz scene, composer and musician Matana Roberts has been exploring their own family history as part of African-American history since 2010 with the long-term project “Coin Coin”: the result is a fever dream of field recordings, jazz passages, text fragments, gospel and blues elements and electronica.

Audrey Chen is a Taiwanese-American musician living in Berlin. Using the voice and electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised, is completely un-processed and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of an analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.

Axel Dörner studied piano and trumpet in Arnhem and Cologne and lives in Berlin. In addition to his collaboration with numerous internationally renowned musicians in the fields of improvised music, new music, jazz and electronic music, he has developed a new, extraordinary style of trumpet playing based on sometimes unusual, often newly invented playing techniques. Dörner is considered one of the most important voices in improvised music worldwide.
