God, home, family – these are the most important topics for a woman in the eyes of the Hungarian government. In Mikolt Tózsa's “God, Homeland, Kitchen”, a young person tries to fulfil this role. Critically and humorously, the performance shows the conflicts between the reality of people's lives and the political ideas of the Hungarian government.
The title of this solo performance by and with Mikolt Tózsa picks up on one of the most frequently uttered political slogans of the Christian-conservative government ideology in Hungary: “God, home, family”. The current government, which has made these patriarchal values its banner, contributed in some way to the creation of ‘God, homeland, kitchen’': on the one hand, it has set narrow limits on independent theatre in Hungary, while on the other, the performance incorporates the voices of its most prominent representatives in a sound collage. These public statements, which prescribe rather than describe the role of women in society, serve as a backdrop for the young protagonist's personal reflections. When does ideology come up against the reality of young people's lives? What is left after a relationship comes to an end? What to do with its material and verbal remains, its embodied memory? The performer and theatre maker captures moments of vulnerability while showing her failure to conform to the roles expected of her (or that she imposes on herself). “God, Homeland, Kitchen” is a personal, political, emotional, and critical survey of the present from the perspective of a young generation in Budapest. It paints a disturbing and abysmal picture of the situation of women in a country that is drifting ever further to the right.
