Part of “Radical Mutation: On the Ruins of Rising Suns”
This evening focusses on ancient healing methods as a form of resistance to anti-Black racism. It features performances by two artists – Shannon Sea and Nasheeka Nedsreal – that reflect on the ways in which for centuries, marginalized groups have performed self-care in the face of systemic oppression. While the notion of ‘self-care’ suggests that this form of healing can happen individually, the performances extend the concept to a collective practice.
When we bathe in sound, different areas of our bodies respond as sound travels through it. Shannon Sea is a Bahamian-American composer, sound artist, and sonic activist. She will perform a live set, and take you on a sonic journey that invites self-exploration. Shannon’s sound healing sessions feature nature soundscapes, field recordings, electro-acoustic sounds, melodic synths, and oscillating low-frequency sound waves that vibrate your entire body. Shannon's composition practice is based on her intimate connection to sound and silence, as well as the techniques and philosophies of Lao Tzu, Alice Coltrane, and Toru Takemitsu.
