Beginnings Marathon

6h - participatory durational performance

Bring a book! For this participatory durational performance project by Vlatka Horvat, members of the public are invited to read out loud the first page of a book that's important to them in a language of their choice. From the start of much loved classics to pulp novels, theoretical treatises, obscure poetic texts, children’s stories and popular histories, Horvat’s participatory work fills the space with endless first pages, creating a collage of beginnings, openings, and unfinished narratives.

Mixing participants invited specifically by the artist and ‘open mic’ participants attending the event, Beginnings Marathon gives voice to the texts that people feel a special connection to, staging the act of reading out loud to create a communal space of listening, thinking and imagining.
Frequently Asked Questions

What would I have to do to take part in the Beginnings Marathon?

You would need to choose a book, which you would bring with you to the event, and read from it only the first page, for an audience of other participants and HAU visitors.

What kind of a book should I bring?

The book you bring can be in any genre and on any topic – classics, pulp novels, theoretical treatises, obscure poetic texts, children’s stories, popular histories, textbooks, nonfiction books, professional manuals, etc. It should be a book that is important to you in some way. It can be your favourite book from when you were growing up, or a book you’ve read 5 or 6 times, or a book you frequently return to – a book that for whatever reason made a connection to you.

The books can be any genre and any topic and can be read in any language.
