Orpheus in der Oberwelt: Eine Schlepperoper

  • Theatre
German /

The southeastern external border of the EU is formed by a river which is called Evros in Greece and Meriç in Turkey. Many people have lost their lives crossing this border zone, heavily armed with fences and minefields by the European Border Agency Frontex. At the same time, this no-man's-land is a natural paradise. This is ancient 'Thrace,' which was already considered an archaic location even in Greek myths. Orpheus' head floated down the river Evros, still singing after being cut off by the Erinyes. Inspired by Monteverdi's opera “L’Orfeo,” the international artist collective andcompany&Co. is creating a music theatre piece, bringing the mythical significance of the area face to face with the current reality of the border zone.
