The Cadela Força Trilogy: Chapter I – The Bride and The Goodnight Cinderella

  • Theatre
Minimum age: 18 years
Brazilian Portuguese /  With German and English surtitles /  approx. 150 mins.
Photography of a group of 7 people in sporty clothing. They look like they are dancing. In the background is a canvas on which a sunset motif is depicted.
Photography of a stage scene. In the centre is a table. On the left in the foreground is a person in a dismissive posture. In the background is a projected scene of a veiled person on a coastal promenade.
A Stage scene in which Carolina Bianchi lies unconscious on a mattress. Three people dance and jump around her. A text is projected in the background: Indeed, rape is rarely about sex, about desire.

In her work, theatre maker Carolina Bianchi weaves together literary, pop-cultural and art-historical references, and incisively questioning the state of affairs. In the first part of her trilogy “Cadela Força” (“Bitch Strength”), Bianchi deals with the recent history of sexualised violence against women. In the process, she puts herself in a state of utmost vulnerability by taking knockout drops – called “Goodnight Cinderella” in Brazil and also used in Germany as a rape drug. While recounting the femicide of performance artist Pippa Bacca, Bianchi finally loses consciousness. Along with eight performers from her collective Cara de Cavalo from São Paulo, Bianchi explores what an unconscious body without memory can tell us while connecting to the reality of many survivors. Following its premiere at this year’s Festival d’Avignon, the new work can now be seen in Berlin.

“This all-too-real performance single-handedly jolted Avignon alive over the first week of the festival, turning Bianchi – an unknown, Amsterdam-based artist – into a sensation at the event.” Laura Cappelle, The New York Times, July 12, 2023
