On tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her company, Marie Chouinard is visiting Tanz im August with two works: Soft virtuosity, still humid, on the edge is her most recent work, which was made in 2015 for the Colours – International Dance Festival at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart. HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS (2011) is also being shown in Berlin for the first time.
A book as a choreographic score: this was Marie Chouinard’s approach to Henri Michaux’s Mouvements. Page by page she transformed the Belgian surrealist’s mescaline-induced watercolour and ink drawings, his 15-page poem and even its postscript into dance. The audience reads along: Michaux’s Mouvements are projected onto the back wall of the stage. Bodies contort into living calligraphies, sometimes elegantly curved, sometimes just scribbled, like animals or plants, stickmen or Asian characters. Grotesque and funny, HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS is a choreo-graphic delight.
Marie Chouinard and her company have been present on the international stage since 1990. She has presented large-scale choreographies at Tanz im August, such as Le Sacre du Printemps in 1994, with its bizarre horned creatures, or bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS in 2005, in which she challenged her dancers to form new body images – a third pointed shoe in their hands, on crutches or constricted by bodices of rubber bands. Before founding her company, Chouinard provoked shocked and enthusiastic responses as a solo dancer who masturbated or urinated on stage, or put herself up for auction. Marie Chouinard is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France, and an internationally touring representative of contemporary Canadian dance.
