This evening reflects upon female knowledge and feminist strategies through artistic presentations: Maryam Palizban dedicates a lecture to the role of feminism and women in the history of Iranian film and – following the uprising of Jin, Jiyan, Azadî – draws connections to the present day. The sound artist Yara Mekawei uses research-based, historically developed practices to connect mythical pasts with the highly developed technology of the present. At the centre of the presented work is an unfinished sound piece that combines Sufi poetry with historical social philosophies and her own cultural identity.

Yara Mekawei, a sonic artist and scholar, merges the urban pulse with architectural essence, crafting intricate auditory vignettes. Her sonic work transcends conventional artistic paradigms, transmuting sound into sight through a synesthetic alchemy. Rooted in architectural philosophy, social historiography, and philosophical literature, she weaves diverse conceptual dimensions. Central to her approach is a forthcoming sonic opus, blending Sufi poetry and the wisdom of the Book of the Dead. Mekawei's art draws inspiration from historical social philosophies, reflecting her cultural identity.

Maryam Palizban is a theatre scholar, author, actress and director. Interdisciplinarity in relation to “religion and culture” has been a central element of Palizban’s research since her dissertation in 2014 at the Department of Theatre Studies at Freie Universität and her first academic research projects at the Centre for Literary and Cultural Research Berlin (ZfL). She pursues an innovative research approach to the relationship between religion – especially Islam – and culture, theatre and text. In her native Iran, she has become known as a film actress and poet. She has lived in Berlin since 2005 and works as a researcher and artist in Berlin and Tehran (until recently). Her most recent publication “Understanding and Forgetting the Body – Interdisciplinary Approaches” deals with the question of human corporeality in an interdisciplinary way. Last year, she took part in the protests of the Jina Revolution by publishing a picture without a headscarf and has since been involved in various oppositional feminist networks.
