About the work of Philipp Gehmacher

    German /

What seems to separate the bodies in Philipp Gehmacher's choreographies is what joins them–if anything can join them at all. Bodies that touch each other at the boundaries, without crossing them, bodies that are these boundaries. Exposed bodies, exposed to contact, in all its unpredictability. As if they were a phantom joke, a sensitive void faced toward other voids, in their name. The lecture will attempt to speak in the name of the bodies not given, the gestures not articulated, the melancholy histories, the minimalist pathos, the aesthetic rigor in Gehmacher's work.

Krassimira Kruschkova has been director of the theory centre at Tanzquartier Wien since 2003. Habilitation in 2002 at the Institute for Theatre, Film, and Media Studies at the Univerisity of Vienna. Professor for theatre and performance theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Visiting professor at the FU Berlin and at the University of Vienna. Curator of numerous international lecture and performance series and symposia.

Philipp Gehmacher, born in Vienna in 1975, studied at the London Contemporary Dance School and the Laban Centre London. His novel formats include incubator (2004) as a stations project, walk + talk (2011), in which choreographers speak about and in movement, and–with Rémy Héritier–the improvisation Theater in the museum installation “Vertical Endeavor” by artist Hans Schabus. Since 2007 he has been collaborating with the choreographer Meg Stuart. Since 2008 he has been working with the visual artist Vladimir Miller.
