Lia Rodrigues

Encantado

  • Dance
approx. 60 mins.

In Portuguese, the word “Encantado” has several meanings. It can be either a synonym of astonishment and wonder or qualify the effects of a magic spell, as in the English “enchanted”. It also alludes to animated entities from the Brazilian culture, the “encantados”, which navigate between land and sky, dunes and rocks, and which turn them into sacred places. It is these mysterious forces, intimately linked to nature, under threat in today's world, which are the inspiration behind Lia Rodrigues's “Encantado”. Like many other works, the choreographer developed it in the dance centre she founded in the Favela de Maré (Rio de Janeiro). The eleven dancers on stage use a multiplicity of colourful fabrics, bought in local markets, creating images and landscapes. They are accompanied by music and excerpts of songs of the Guarani people, played during the August 2021 protests in Brasília to recognise their endangered ancestral territories.

When Lia Rodrigues and her Companhia de Danças tell of being enchanted, the most diverse beings come together in an incredible dance. Movements travel from one body to the next − water becomes centipede becomes mushroom. Enchanted − Encantado − the world beyond human category thinking comes into its own.

HAU has accompanied the work of Lia Rodrigues for many years. Most recently, in 2020, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the “Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças” and following an invitation of HAU, “Creation Notebooks” was produced, a series of seven films on her works of recent years, but also on the current pandemic and its effects on the lives of the company members.
