On Justice #3

My Body, My Rights

With Adriana Lamačková, Ewa Majewska, Leonie Steinl, Tina Tomšič & Zorka Wollny

Moderation: Peggy Piesche

  • Dialogue
English /  approx. 120 mins.

The right to make decisions about one's own body should be self-evident. And yet it is enshrined in law in very few countries around the world – not even in Germany. Feminists have been fighting for reproductive rights, i.e. the right to reproductive health, sexual self-determination, contraception and abortion, for more than a century, and now, with the rise of far-right movements, they are under even more pressure. In the third edition of “On Justice,” prominent activists from Eastern Europe and Germany as well as legal experts illustrate the connections between misogyny, authoritarianism and right-wing extremism and discuss the current legal battles for bodily and reproductive self-determination on a national and international level.

Peggy Piesche is a German cultural studies scholar. She works for the Federal Agency for Civic Education as a specialist for diversity, intersectionality, and decoloniality. She is considered one of the most well-known voices of Black women in Germany.

Leonie Steinl is the Chair of the Criminal Law Commission of the German Women Lawyers Association. Her research focuses on hate crime, offenses against sexual self-determination, criminal law and gender theory, as well as international criminal law and transitional justice.

Tina Tomšič speaks, as the network coordinator, for the Europe-wide campaign “My Voice, My Choice” – a movement of organizations demanding fundamental and reproductive rights.

Adriana Lamačková is the Associate Director for National Legal Strategies in Europe at the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Ewa Majewska is a Polish philosopher, political activist and author. She was actively involved in antifascist, ecological and reproductive rights women’s movements in Poland. Her book “Feminist Antifascism: Counterpublics of the Common” was published by Verso in 2021.

Zorka Wollny is an interdisciplinary artist from Poland, who will be presenting her artistic project “Let’s Make Noise, Sisters!” from the black protest movements in Poland in order to give context to the discussion.

Latest information for arrival

There is currently a construction site on Hallesches Ufer between Wilhelmstraße and Möckernbrücke underground station. There is a divided replacement route for pedestrians (right) and cyclists (left), which are separated by a yellow ground line. The carriageway is narrowed to one lane.

Travelling to HAU2 via U Hallesches Tor:

If you are coming from Hallesches Tor underground station, you will have to use an alternative footpath from Wilhelmstraße / Hallesches Ufer junction, which is separated from the carriageway by a construction fence – the actual footpath is currently closed. Please note: the alternative route is also used by cyclists. Pedestrians should keep to the right. We therefore currently recommend that visually impaired or blind visitors come to the HAU with an accompanying person.

Arrival HAU2 via U Möckernbrücke:

When you leave Möckernbrücke underground station, please stay on the footpath on the canal side until you reach Hallesches Ufer / Großbeerenstraße junction – the opposite side is currently closed due to construction work.
