Residenzen Berlin – Detroit – Berlin

  • Music
  • Performance

In preparation of “Detroit-Berlin: One Circle” the artists Joana Tischkau and Anta Helena Recke embark on a research trip to Detroit together with the Berlin sound artist Nguyễn Baly (the trip was supported by the Goethe-Institut and HAU Hebbel am Ufer). Recke and Tischkau focused on Detroit as a city with a black majority und explored the pop-musical historiography that is deeply influenced by Black music and Black music history. Their experiences and research materials complement an evolving archive that was established in collaboration with the artists Elisabeth Hampe and Frieder Blume. This archive focuses on Afro-German folk music (Schlager) as well as on hip hop and pop music from the 1950s on, which are fused by the group into the artistic movement Schwarze Deutsche Welle (SDW). Nguyễn Baly explored Detroit’s landscape of abandoned buildings as a physical representation of one of the many failed scenarios of capitalism. For her live sound-performance, she has teamed up Tara Transitory aka One Man Nation: they explore acoustic atmospheres in performative spaces, asking how they transmit certain moods. The artistic duo is communicating with a modular synthesizer system and investigates the relation between movement and spatial sounds.

The Kotti-Shop did a residence in Detroit aswell.
