First, there was the "Nkomati Accord". The failed, 'historical', political agreement between the South African Apartheid State and Mozambique’s president Samora Machel in the 1980s. It is named after the Inkomati river, a spine that cuts across and transcends three countries, Mozambique, Swaziland, and South Africa. "The Inkomati (dis)cord" is an approach that diametrically opposes that of the abortive political accord. A collaborative project between the choreographers Boyzie Cekwana and Panaibra Gabriel Canda, the project stems from a desire to tell their stories from their perspective, as neighbours and Africans, in direct opposition to the unyielding Western paradigm of a continent drowning in perpetual need and turmoil. "This work is a study in transcendence. This transcendence informs and inspires our interest in developing a work that attempts to break artificial borders and traverse territories of the body, skin, identities and histories. The work seeks to explore, in a small way, the very deep, but superficial and internalized colonial boundaries that still alienate shared histories and aspirations."(Boyzie Cekwana and Panaibra Gabriel Canda)
