“Today [we] believe in the possibility of love, and that is the reason why [we] are endeavoring to trace its imperfections and perversions.”
Frantz Fanon: “Black Skin, White Masks”, 1952
What type of love emerges at home, on the streets, in a neighbourhood, in a society, in a world governed by the logics of stratification that necessitate violent acts of subjugation and containment? Can affection unshared, discerning, isolated, in defence of its own security and untethered from the messiness of earthly relations be labelled as love? Can love ever be more than this? Could love understood/practiced differently ever be capacious enough and resilient enough to be employed in ways that can operate on and undo forms of oppression? And even if it could, what forms would this take?
Springing from Fanon’s provocation, “a po(e/li)tics of love” proposes a communal journey that explores the convergence of love and politics as they extend beyond personal attachments to encompass broader socio-cultural dynamics. Delving into the complexities, contradictions, and challenges inherent in experiences and expressions of love under conditions of (im)possibility the siblings, artists, and cultural workers Ligia, George, Isabel, and Sarah Lewis have curated a compilation featuring a short documentary, stories, music, and texts from artists/thinkers who make us question/feel how love might be recognized and enacted. The audience is invited to engage with the curated selection in the immersive setting of the Vessel of Love throughout the evening along with the siblings who will also intermittently respond to the assembled inputs through sound, movement, and discussion.
