To celebrate their second anniversary, Kiki Lounge Berlin are showing their love for the ballroom community and culture with a kiki ball. Its titular theme, “Love is Together”, symbolises the desire for a place of belonging. It represents an alternative home in response to the profound need for relationships and families, especially for trans and queer BIPOC.

This universal search for connection created the ground on which the ballroom scene emerged in Harlem, New York, in the 1960s. Trans and queer African-American and Latinx communities were reacting to social and structural marginalisation from the majority society as well as their biological families. The spirit of ballroom culture is alive not only at the balls themselves but also before, in between, and after, thriving in the embrace between ballroom sisters and in the affection of ballroom parents. “Love is Together” celebrates these relationships and affinities that challenge, support and empower – and teach us how to love and be loved.
