Love, lust, and lies: That’s the essence of the epistolary novel “Dangerous Liaisons,” first published in 1782 during the Ancien Régime. The 175 letters therein paint a picture of the aristocracy, whose lofty profession is to kill time. Seduction, deception, humiliation, and power games are the pastimes in the salons of castles and manor houses. Meanwhile, on the eve of the French Revolution, the servants are sharpening the blade of the guillotine. With Showcase Beat Le Mot, the story unfolds at the end of a soirée in a salon, where there are tassels, frills, palm fronds, chaises longues, and soft cushions. It all culminates with the opening of the aviaries as the captive birds fly off to freedom. When the violin music sets in, the good spirits return. The farmers poke their heads through the castle gates and enjoy the splendour of the festival and fire from afar. Following “1000 Things Falling,” the performance collective celebrates their latest production at HAU, which is by no means their first work about revolution.
